    District Making Major Repairs at USMA West Point After Historic Floods

    Last summer, when a severe thunderstorm dropped several months’ worth of rain (eight inches) in just a few hours in New York’s Hudson Valley north of New York City, it triggered historic flooding resulting in landslides, flooded homes, washed out roads and all but engulfing the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, where the New York District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a robust military-construction mission. Many buildings and vehicles were also damaged.

    Growing the next generation: Safety and occupational health professionals gather for annual conference

    Springtime in the Midwest can be volatile as temperatures fluctuate and severe weather is common. This time of year often prompts safety drills across the region. Perhaps it was not a coincidence then that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Safety and Occupational Health Program’s community of practice gathered in the heartland — Kansas City, Missouri — for their annual community of practice meeting. The theme of this year’s meeting was “growing the next generation.” Safety and occupational health professionals from across the USACE enterprise came to Kansas City, Missouri, to discuss all things safety and occupational health. The five-day community of practice meeting was a chance for staff from all districts, divisions and headquarters to convene in one location and discuss current operations and the future of the program in USACE.

    Empowering Women Through Recognition

    Katie Lewis, a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, was recently recognized at the Lockport City School District’s “Women Who ROAR” event for her work as a civil engineer. The event celebrated women from the community who have achieved success in various fields such as STEM, healthcare, community engagement and the arts. Having been part of the district’s Construction Branch since 2009, Lewis ensures that many of the district's construction projects are safe and efficiently completed according to very specific specifications.
