    On May 7, 2021, Trevor Lindsey, construction contract representative for the Kansas City District, displayed an act of heroism at Longview Lake in Kansas City, Mo. During a construction meeting outdoors, he heard a cry for help on the water and quickly responded to save a potential drowning victim, who was hanging on to the side of a capsized canoe, without a life jacket.

    Corps employee saves life of boater in distress

    In the blink of an eye the unexpected can happen, especially on the water. Imagine heading out to go fishing at sunrise to be the first to hit that honey hole in the calm of the morning. Fog gently rising above the water, slight breeze through the air, it seems like the perfect start to the day, until something bad happens. That’s how the day started as Trevor Lindsey, construction contract representative for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, started a 7 a.m. meeting on May 7, 2021 at Longview Lake in Kansas City, Mo. Just a beautiful day by the lake with a construction meeting outdoors, until he heard a cry for help near the lake.

    LTG Spellman Visits Bluestone Dam

    LTG Scott Spellmon, 55th Chief of Engineers, visited Huntington District’s Bluestone Dam near Hinton, W. Va. to be updated on the Phase 5 Bluestone Safety Modification Project. As part of the update he was able to see firsthand the successes the district has had with safely integrating project operations with the construction project as well as the collaborative efforts of the Dam Safety Mandatory Center of Expertise in the design and construction. The lessons learned in this process have been shared across the entire enterprise.
  • IN THE PHOTOS, Project Manager Jairus Stroupe and St. Francis Basin and White River Backwater Section Chief Billy Grantham attended the Arkansas Water Trails dedication ceremony along with Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, the St. Francis Lake Association, the Arkansas Water Trails, the City of Trumann, and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. On behalf of the St. Francis Lake Association, Dr. Neal Vickers recognized U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Project Manager Jairus Stroupe and late USACE Retiree Regina Kuykendoll Cash for their efforts in maintaining the St. Francis Basin. Those efforts are now responsible for allowing the river to be appropriately regulated within the sunken lands.

    Memphis District assists Arkansas with St. Francis water trail dedication

    In partnership with the St. Francis Lake Association, the Arkansas Water Trails, and the City of Trumann, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) celebrated the dedication of the St. Francis Sunken Lands Water Trails on May 5, 2021.  Governor Asa Hutchinson offered some inspiring words about the value of outdoor recreation to the lives of Arkansans, saying, “The tourism industry is on the rise in Arkansas! The new St. Francis Sunken Lands Water Trails will be a major attraction in Poinsett county, bringing people in to take in this unique view of Arkansas’s natural history.”
  • Progress photos of the Forked Deer Hard Points construction project. The construction for the task order awarded was completed on the current River Repairs IDIQ Contract to Midwest Construction Company (Luhr Brothers as a sub-contractor) for $614,600. The scope of work included placing 25,600 tons of 250-pound riprap stone on the river training structures of the Mississippi River. These repairs to the navigation channel were necessary to restore the existing hardpoints and to protect eroding and over-steepened banks between and behind the structures.

    "The Memphis District is responsible for maintaining a safe and dependable Mississippi River navigation channel to a minimum of 9 feet deep and 300 feet wide at all times and at all river stages," Project Manager Mark Mazzone said. That's why projects like this, the Mississippi River Channel Improvement Stone Repairs Task Order – Forked Deer Hard Points Repair, are so essential to execute as needed.
  • The conduit stub ups at the substation which are used to bring electricity to the Central Utility Plant at the Next National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency West Headquarters site under construction in St. Louis, Mo. March 3, 2021. The building complex is expected to be occupied in 2025.

    The challenges and complexities of any Mega-Project are great, and the Next NGA West – known as N2W – project is no different. From the beginning of this military construction program for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, USACE’s leadership wanted to attract a diverse and talented group of professionals.
