    Sectioned pieces of steel from the STURGIS vessel are seen stacked and prepared for recycling February 26, 2019 during the vessel’s shipbreaking in Brownsville, Texas. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District managed the final decommissioning and dismantling of the STURGIS, the Army’s former floating nuclear power plant, and in addition to safely removing more than 1.5 million pounds of radioactive material the project team was able to recycle approximately 600,000 pounds of lead and more than 5,000 tons of steel and other assorted recyclables.

    Army Corps environmental pioneer Zebrowski retires

    As the director of the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville’s Environmental and Munitions Center of Expertise, Sandi Zebrowski led more than 60 Corps employees in providing high quality engineering and scientific support to environmental remediation, munitions response and compliance programs around the world.

    USACE Fire Protection Expertise used worldwide

    The Transatlantic Middle East District has been home to the Aircraft Hangar Fire Protection Technical Center of Expertise (TCX) since 1989 when the District was known as the Middle East/Africa Project Office, after a USACE inquiry for assistance troubleshooting a fire protection system in a hangar in Shemya Island, Alaska, in the Aleutian Islands was successful.

    Crews searching for buried explosives at a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) in northwest Washington D.C.’s Spring Valley neighborhood are using the latest in advanced technology to reduce unnecessary impacts to private property and to improve efficiency.
  • Matthew Flacksenburg, a junior at James Wood High School, prepared a presentation on the renovation of James Wood High School’s Theater as his capstone project for a project management internship with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Middle East District. He was the District's first ever project management intern. Flacksenburg presented his project at the Frederick Country Gifted and Talented Showcase along with his mentor, Marissa Louden, a Middle East District project manager. The Middle East District’s high school intern program is dedicated to sparking an interest in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers positions for future generations of bright and driven individuals with an interest in STEM and/or project management.
