    Metro Savannah-area teachers join marine archaeologists, Civil War re-enactors and other specialists to learn how to integrate science, technology, engineer and math (STEM) lessons from the recovery of the ironclad CSS Georgia into their classrooms. As part of the four-day institute delivered by Georgia Tech University in Savannah, the educators visit Old Fort Jackson, the location where the under-powered warship was anchored in the early 1860s. The visit to Old Fort Jackson allowed them to learn how evolving technology impacted the soldiers and sailors at the fort and aboard the CSS Georgia. Through hands-on demonstrations, the teachers employed several basic engineering and technology actions which can be adapted to classroom instruction. They also observed underwater archaeology techniques used to locate the CSS Georgia wreck on the bottom of the Savannah River. The teachers saw first-hand the methods used to pinpoint thousands of artifacts recovered from the scuttled vessel during 2015. Leading marine archaeologist Stephen James demonstrated the sophisticated equipment used to guide divers through the zero-visibility waters of the Savannah River. The Teachers’ Institute ran from May 31 through June 3, 2016, and was funded through the community involvement portion of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP). The SHEP will deepen the Savannah harbor from 42 feet to 47 feet.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The school year continued for 15 educators who returned to the classroom to unearth ways to bring curriculum to life during the CSS Georgia Teacher’s Institute held May 31 – June 3 at Georgia Tech Savannah.

    West Hill Dam Park Rangers spread word about water safety

    Lt. Gen. Thomas Bostick, Chief of Engineers, has made it no secret that one of his priorities is Water Safety. Just last March, the Corps of Engineers launched a new water safety campaign titled, “Life Jackets Worn, Nobody Mourns,” citing the extreme dangers of not wearing a life jacket in or on the water. In New England, the District’s recreational facilities hold many water safety programs for the public throughout the year and Park Rangers will often take the Corps water safety message to schools and other events. Such was a case when West Hill Dam Park Rangers Viola Bramel and Ronald Woodall represented the District at the Annual Kids Family Resource Fair in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, on March 19.

    District, partners, move forward with Turtle Nesting Habitat Enhancement Project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Edward MacDowell Lake in Peterborough, New Hampshire has been working with state and local partners since September 2013 on a turtle nesting habitat project that will greatly benefit turtles and upland species.

The lesson is only one portion of a new water education program, 'Raystown Lake: Protecting your Future, One Drop at a Time!', that aims to provide students an understanding of the value of water resources in their community, as well as general knowledge regarding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ mission in providing water-based needs to the Raystown Lake area and surrounding communities. Raystown Lake was one of 186 federal sites selected to receive a 2015 field trip grant from the National Park Foundation (NPF), the official charity of America’s national parks. The grant, part of NPF’s Open OutDoors for Kids Program, supports the White House’s Every Kid in a Park youth initiative, which provides fourth-grade children and their families a pass granting free access to national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges.
