    Engineering Career Day engages students and promotes STEM careers

    STEM is a national and regional effort to better prepare the workforce of tomorrow by encouraging today’s students to engage in studies, events and careers involving science, technology, engineering and math. The Engineering Career Day event invites student teams to compete in building and entering a take home project, completing a surprise project assigned the day of the event and a trivia challenge. Team 2 from Bishop Kenny, Thunder Buddies, was the overall winner of the competition.

    Tulsa District 2012 Leadership Training Program graduates 12 students

    A group of twelve Tulsa District emerging leaders completed a yearlong Leadership Development Program culminating in a graduation ceremony to commemorate their achievement.
  • Occupational safety and health specialists like Steve McCombs ensure that scaffolding at project sites is safe and that contractor personnel are adhering to accident prevention plans.

    Corps’ proactive safety stance helps prevent mishaps

    The District employs six safety and occupational health specialists, and one wellness coordinator, to cover its widespread area of operations. These employees keep tabs on myriad projects, like military and civil works construction, dredging, and operation and maintenance activities, as well as more routine workplace safety aspects like promoting ergonomic work environments, wellness activities and managing the Army Safety Program requirements.
  • An American Heritage Girls Troop learns about structural integrity using gumdrops and toothpicks. Bo Wycoff, civil engineer, prepares to test toothpick and gumdrop structures built by the girls. Greg Schmidt, deputy chief of the Engineering Division, serves as an adult leader for the troop and helps them earn their engineering merit badge. Schmidt created the badge for the national organization in 2010.

    While promoting careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to Alaska’s youth, employees at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District are getting inspired, too.
