    Logistics team removes area offices’ excess equipment

    In the early morning hours of their five-day trip to Duluth, Minnesota, the Detroit District Logistics team were quietly loading excess equipment onto a flat-bed truck headed south. The equipment’s destination was the UNICOR facility in Kansas, an electronics recycling center that converts electronics into recyclable materials for resale to registered vendors. “By using UNICOR, we estimate $8,000 in savings to the district based on acquisition cost,” said Detroit District Logistics Manager Jena Graham. “Due to the area offices being spread out, it was not cost effective to consolidate their excess at one location for a typical pick-up.” A one-way trip from the District Headquarters in Detroit, Michigan to the Duluth Area Office in Minnesota is nearly a 12-hour drive.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 16, 2021) –U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Nashville District employees graduated from the 2021 Nashville District Leadership Development Program II on September 14th. The evening graduation ceremony was held at the Scarritt Bennett Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

    USACE Vicksburg District Mat Sinking Unit forges ahead with revetment mission

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District Mat Sinking Unit (MSU) forged ahead with revetment operations on the Mississippi River, Tuesday, following a safety pause due to COVID-19. The floating plant’s annual season took a four week pause to help ensure the safety of the crew during the most recent COVID-19 spike.
  • Volunteers from within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Far East District organize donation items that were collected from throughout the workforce during FED’s first Sungyook Orphanage donation drive at District headquarters, Sept. 10. The District collected 675 items, to include clothes, books, toys, makeup, accessories, school supplies and more, and delivered the gifts to the orphanage, Sept. 13, in time for the Chuseok holiday.

    Far East District employees unite to donate Chuseok gifts to Korean orphans

    PYEONGTAEK, Republic of Korea - Employees of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Far East District (FED) rallied together over a period of four weeks to collect and donate six large boxes filled with gifts for Sungyook Orphanage, located near District headquarters in Pyeongtaek, Sept. 13.

  • Olmsted Locks and Dam sets record, replaces first wickets

    Near the confluence of the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers is where more commerce passes through than any other location on the entire U.S. inland waterways, making the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District’s Olmsted Locks and Dam one of the busiest locks in the country. More than 70 million tons of commerce passes through the Olmsted, Illinois, facility each year. Olmsted Locks and Dam is very different from the other locks and dams on the Ohio River because it is the only one with a wicket dam.
