    Dave Smith, research ecologist from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Miss., surgically implants an acoustic tag into a 1-year-old steelhead trout March 25, 2013, at the Coleman National Fish Hatchery in Anderson, Calif. Smith is using the fish-tag data obtained for use in a computer model that helps evaluate habitat restoration work under the Sacramento River Bank Protection Project, a joint flood risk reduction effort between the district and the state's California Central Valley Flood Protection Board to repair river bank erosion along the Sacramento River and its tributaries.

    Fish behavior guides riverbank repairs

    Reducing flood risk in an environmentally mindful way brought ecologists to the Coleman National Fish Hatchery in Anderson, Calif., March 25-27 2013, to surgically implant electronic tracking devices into hundreds of live fish to study their behavior in the Sacramento River system.

    Residents learn about proposed confined blasting for Jacksonville Harbor

    When most people hear the term “blasting,” they imagine a cosmic explosion of material that shoots into the earth’s atmosphere and shakes foundations. However, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Study, the proposed confined blasting technique to remove rock obstacles will sound more like a bullet as it is fired from a gun and will barely cause a blip on the radar.

    WIESBADEN, Germany – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District boasted the top safety record, practices and procedures in all of North Atlantic Division last year. The district was recognized for its “creative, effective and tireless efforts” to save lives and families within a broad and varied area of responsibility, according to a citation received in the fiscal year 2012 USACE Chief of Engineers Awards for Safe Performance.
