    The Charleston District recently acquired a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system that allows us to get detailed imagery of the topography of our projects. The survey team mounted the LiDAR onto an ATV and created the RAMbLr (Rapid Assessment Mobile LiDAR) which enables them to take quick assessments of project conditions.

  • The Charleston District has a Job Order Contract (JOC) in place that allows smaller projects to be completed by a single contractor without new contracts being awarded each time. A JOC is awarded for a set amount of money and once projects have totaled that amount, the JOC is done. This allows smaller projects to be done quicker without having to go through the whole contracting process each time.

  • Student shadows District engineers, determines his future path

    The Middle East District and Frederick County Public Schools collaborated on shadowing sessions so a local student could explore engineering careers. The program fits perfectly with the USACE commitment of teaming with others to strengthen programs that inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

    STEM shadowing experience successful for all

    The recently completed shadowing experience was reportedly a success from all perspectives. Middle East District engineers and architects shared time with a local high school student in one-hour increments throughout February, March, April and May. Most of the engineers and architects who spent time with the student seemed to appreciate the experience.
