    SUFFOLK, Va. -- A munition uncovered by contractors lays on the ground at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot on Dec. 2, 2005. In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999.     FNOD Restoration Advisory Board to meet Thursday

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host their quarterly public meeting regarding restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot Thursday. The Restoration Advisory Board meeting; which will take place at the Courtyard Marriott, 8060 Harbour View Blvd. in Suffolk from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m.; will feature discussions regarding the latest cleanup progress.
  • The River Basin Balancer Game offers insight into an inland waterway and a system of reservoirs, which are operated with a goal for serving each of the benefits, flood control, navigation, hydropower, irrigation, water supply, recreation, fish and wildlife, and water quality, for which many USACE reservoirs are authorized and constructed. Users can take charge of river operations and experience the unique challenges presented when managing reservoir operations in a variety of weather conditions across a geographically diverse basin.

    Managing a river is dam challenging

    In 2013, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Omaha District Leadership Development Class developed a video game that invites players to plan and make releases from two inland waterway dams. The Omaha District, with class members as project managers, awarded a contract to the U.S. Army Game Design studio to design the game. The game allows players to take charge of river operations and experience the unique challenges presented when managing reservoir operations in a variety of weather conditions across a geographically diverse basin. Like the real world, the weather forecast isn’t always accurate, presenting an additional challenge.

  • ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Silvery minnow are measured before being released back into the Rio Grande, Aug. 25, 2015. District biologists are monitoring habitat restoration sites to learn more about the endangered silvery minnow population. This minnow is over 3 inches, which indicates it is over a year old. Minnows produced this year average 30-35 millimeters or about 1.5 inches in length.

    District biologists continue to monitor habitat restoration sites to learn more about the endangered silvery minnow population. “Observations are that the silvery minnow is doing better this year,” said fishery biologist Michael Porter.

The Devils Lake basin is a 3,810 square-mile sub-basin of the Red River of the North with no natural outlet until lake levels reach an elevation 1,458, at which it flows through Tolna Coulee into the Sheyenne River. Maj. Gen. Wehr received an orientation of the Devils Lake Basin prior to attending Devils Lake Executive Committee, or DLEC, meeting July 8, 2015. The DLEC, co-chaired by the commander of the Mississippi Valley Division and the governor of North Dakota, is comprised of representatives from more than 20 Federal, State, tribal, local agencies and governmental entities.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Mississippi Valley Division Commander Maj. Gen. Michael Wehr and St. Paul District Commander Col. Dan Koprowski visited the cities of Minot and Devils Lake, North Dakota, July 6-8, to meet with members of Congress, state and local officials and to see Corps projects in the region.
