    Purple martins (Progne subis) are the largest swallow species in North America and have been a part of human cultures of North America since prior to the arrival of European Settlers to the East Coast. Three Willamette Valley Project locations have purple martin colonies: Cottage Grove, Dorena and Fern Ridge dams and reservoirs.

    An unladen purple martin swallow can reach the air-speed velocity of about 24 miles per hour, which may be important information if you’re trying to cross the ‘Bridge of Death’ as you search for the Holy Grail. It’s also probably impossible for that 1.7-ounce bird to carry a 1.2-kilogram coconut, even if he gripped it by the husk (we are checking with the engineering department though).
  • Grave markers located at the cemetery on Carlisle Barracks show where the remains of two Arapaho children were located and disinterred in August 2017. The marked area around the buried remains represents the excavation area.

    Corps helps return Native American remains

    A team of experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently helped return the remains of two children to their Northern Arapaho tribe. The children had died at Carlisle Indian industrial School in the 1880s and were buried in a cemetery on what is now Carlisle Barracks, in Pennsylvania.
  • Upgrades to the refueling system at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, will increase the pumping capacity to 2,400 gallons per minute for 25 multi-aircraft revetments and six bomber outlets. Two new 420,000 gallon aboveground operating storage tanks will feed the system. During the hot summer months, nearly around the clock construction is overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District's Las Vegas Resident Office.

    Sacramento District helps develop efficient regional-based permitting for the future

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District regulatory team has worked with civic leaders, federal and state agencies, and conservationists to help shape development and ecosystem preservation for perhaps the next 50 years in a huge piece of California’s Central Valley.

    Army Corps participates in Branch Week

    Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, participated in Branch Week held in September at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. Branch Week was an event where cadets pursuing their military education at the U.S. Military Academy had an opportunity to become familiar with the different Branches within the U.S. Army.
