    USACE R&D Day at the University of Illinois a huge success

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recently held a Research and Development (R&D) Day at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
  • Researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District and the City of Tybee Island to measure vessel wakes near the island’s north shore in hopes of understanding which ships and operating conditions are associated with large wakes. Commercial vessels transiting the Savannah entrance channel intermittently generate large wake events on the North Beach, creating a potential hazard for beachgoers.

    ERDC-CHL researchers assess hazardous vessel wakes near Tybee Island

    Researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District and the city of Tybee Island to measure vessel wakes near the island’s north shore in hopes of better understanding which ships and operating conditions are associated with generating large wakes.

Hibner, Commander South Atlantic Division, at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hydrographic Services Review Panel along with Capt. José E. Díaz, Commander, Sector San Juan, Captain of the Port Puerto Rico/U. S. Virgin Islands, U.S. Coast Guard and Cristina Cabrera, Special Assistant and Interim Director of the Office of Coastal Programs and Climate Change at the Department of Natural Resources, Puerto Rico. During the presentation, Rodríguez presented an overview of the coastal projects managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District as well as the agency’s surveying capabilities and maintenance of federal channels and harbors. Rodríguez praised the partnership between both federal agencies as USACE continues to conduct surveys to be used in NOAA nautical charts and build resilient coastal projects.

    Army Corps of Engineers Releases Work Plan for Fiscal Year 2023 Civil Works Appropriations

    WASHINGTON - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) delivered to Congress its Fiscal Year 2023 (FY 2023) Work Plan for the Army Civil Works program Feb. 27. "The FY 2023 Work Plan for Army Civil Works continues the administration’s substantial investments in projects and actions that will strengthen supply chains and the economy by adding capacity at the nation’s waterways and ports, build resilience to the impacts of climate change by reducing flood risks of communities and restoring the aquatic environment, and promote equity in underserved communities consistent with the President’s Justice40 Initiative,” said Michael Connor, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works.
