LAPSE IN DoW APPROPRIATIONS - Friday, October 3, 2025

The most recent appropriations for the Department of War expired at 11:59 p.m. EST on September 30, 2025. Military personnel will continue in a normal duty status without pay until such time as a continuing resolution or appropriations are passed by Congress and signed into law. Civilian personnel not engaged in excepted activities will be placed in a non-work, non-pay status.

 

A NEW CHAPTER: - Tuesday, August 5, 2025

On August 5, 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially realigned mission oversight of USACE operations in support of U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command from the Transatlantic Division to the Southwestern Division. This transition ensures continued, focused support to U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command across the Middle East, Central and South Asia, and the Levant. Both the Middle East District and the Transatlantic Expeditionary District remain fully operational and continue delivering engineering solutions that support regional stability and operational readiness. This is a new chapter, not a new identity. The mission – and the USACE legacy – continues.

    ERDC researcher impacts Department of Defense policy through Climate Action Team

    When the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Samantha Cook enrolled as a music major at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), she never dreamed that an elective class called Global Environmental Change would dramatically change her life. The ERDC-Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) Research Physical Scientist now recalls that it was the first time she heard the phrase “global warming.” “I just took one look at the issue and said, ‘this is the problem of our generation,’” she said. Cook described how she changed her major, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geology from UNH, and then found a position with CRREL. Since November 2021, she has been on a detail with the Department of Defense’s Climate Action Team, helping to shape DOD guidance and policy on issues pertaining to climate change in support of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) and the armed services.

    Aviators from across the country attended a Small Unmanned Aircraft Safety Qualification Course (SUASQC) at the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville October 28.

    ERDC’s Dunkin named USACE Manager of the Year

    Lauren Dunkin, chief of the Coastal Engineering Branch at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), has been named the U.S. Army Corps Engineers (USACE) Manager of the Year.
  • There are approximately 4,000 different species, but only 50 types live solely in freshwater. The most common Bryozoans, which translates to “moss animal” in Latin, are the Pectinatella magnifica. It thrives in the Savannah River lakes and makes its own substrate, forming large gelatinous colonies that attach to anything stationary and grow just below the surface of the water.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah River basin lakes, J. Strom Thurmond, Richard B. Russell and Hartwell, have some strange inhabitants that are alien, globby-looking things, and sometimes mistaken for the eggs of some aquatic creature, but in-fact, they are filter-feeding, microscopic invertebrates known as Freshwater Bryozoan or zooids, and their presence indicates a healthy body of water.

  • U.S. Army Corps and Miami-Dade County to host charrette for re-initiation of Miami-Dade Back Bay Coastal Storm Risk Management Study

    MIAMI – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District and Miami-Dade County, its non-federal sponsor, will host a charrette from November 14 to 18, which will include a public meeting on Monday, Nov. 14 for the re-initiation of the Miami-Dade Back Bay Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study​.
