    Gathright Dam in Alleghany County, Virginia, impounds water flowing down the Jackson River to create the 2,500-acre Lake Moomaw. Since opening in 1979, the dam has prevented numerous floods, saving countless dollars and lives.

    Gathright Dam pulse release canceled as river conditions ‘favorable’

    NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials have canceled Wednesday’s scheduled pulse release at Gathright Dam in the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia near Covington.

    The longest shift: dam operator trapped at Detroit Dam during wildfires

    Before leaving for his work shift, Mike Pomeroy said goodbye to his wife, Ronda, the way he always did: with a promise. “I’ll see you in 14.” The powerplant operator then made the drive for his shift at Detroit Dam that Labor Day evening, in “red flag” conditions as the Beachie Fire consumed swaths of land to the northeast.

    Omaha District recognized with distinguished industry awards

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District received multiple awards from industry stakeholders for performance in construction, small business contracting, safety and public affairs. Receiving these awards is credited to overall teamwork, the culture, and recognition of individuals who have made a significant impact in contributing to the overall success of the USACE mission during fiscal year 2020.
  • A Modular Anti-Ballistic, Blast and Forced Entry Resistant Shelter, or MABFERS, unit is lifted from a transport truck to be craned into position on the two-story structure. The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center designed MABFERS to serve as personnel protection in high-threat locations abroad.

    ERDC modular shelters safeguard U.S. Embassies, State Department employees

    As a research civil engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL), Justin Roberts began exploring ways to use his blast mitigation expertise in protecting unique facilities from large scale explosive testing and his past research experience with structural responses to dynamic loading to develop a new approach in keeping personnel safe.
  • Dr. Edmond Russo, a 27-year U.S. Army Corps of Engineers veteran, has been selected as the director of the Environmental Laboratory at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The ERDC helps solve the nation’s most challenging problems in civil and military engineering, geospatial sciences, water resources and environmental sciences, and conducts research and development in support of the Soldier, military installations and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers civil works mission, as well as for other federal, state and municipal authorities.
