    New bridge restores full McChord airfield capabilities

    A McChord C-17 Globemaster III took off Dec. 22 over the new underground bridge to commemorate the reopening of the McChord Field runway to its full, 10,100-foot operational length. This follows the 11-month closure of almost half of the runway due to two failing culverts under the runway, taxiway and infield.
  • A multi-disciplinary team of operations, engineering and dam safety personnel inspect Detroit Dam Sept. 22 to assess impacts to the project—as well as the project’s functionality and any major safety concerns—after the Beachie Creek and Lionshead fires spread throughout the area upstream and downstream of the dam.

    Broadening the scope of post-wildfire flood risk management

    As firefighters worked diligently to extinguish a notable number of wildfires this season, researchers with U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) post-wildfire flood risk management team took a step back to evaluate how they could improve their efforts in assisting with the devastating effects of the fires.

    Memphis dry dock back in action

    The largest dry dock north of New Orleans, Louisiana, is back in action at the Memphis District's Ensley Engineer Yard after spending 14 months in Morgan City, Louisiana. The Memphis District dry dock, known as ‘5801', was shipped to the Conrad Shipyard in Louisiana for repairs and maintenance in June 2019. The dock has been operating since 1958.

  • Chartouni named USACE Cost Engineer of Year

    George Chartouni, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Chicago District, was awarded the USACE Cost Engineer of the Year award at a virtual national awards ceremony on Nov. 12, 2020, hosted by Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, 55th Chief of Engineers and Commanding General.
