    Mobile District water expert helps Florida residents recover after Hurricane Irma

    In the wake of Hurricane Irma’s devastation, few things are more important to affected Florida residents than drinking water and wastewater. With this in mind, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, prepositioned water expert Mark Crawford, in Tallahassee, Fla., even before the storm hit.

    Pathways internship augments classroom with hands-on experience

    Choosing a career is never easy. Internships offer college students an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and learn about different career opportunities. Grant Cooper, a Pathways Program intern with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, was eager to work alongside the district’s engineers to see daily operations at various project sites.

    During the summer of 2017, R.D. Bailey Lake hosted its first ever Student Conservation Association (SCA) intern, Brady Shrader. He grew up thirty minutes from the project so right at home as he worked alongside park rangers. On a typical day, they conducted land and boat patrols, contacted visitors regarding safety concerns, assisted with water safety outreach programs, and created a live animal interpretive display for the visitor center.
  • The Johnson's served as the Gerald R. Freeman Campground hosts for seven years. The Bender's have served as the Bee Run Campground Hosts for five years. Tony Adkins and Pam Roberts have provided mowing and lawn maintenance in Bakers Run for five years. In addition, each of them have assisted with Spring Clean-Up Week, Water Safety Outreach, flood clean-up, restroom cleaning, emergency responses, Campground Activities, and dozens of repair and small construction projects.

    Sutton Lake Honors Six Distinguished Volunteers

    During the Annual Sutton Lake Volunteer Picnic, Huntington District Deputy District Engineer LTC Miller recognized six volunteers for exceptional service. The volunteers, John and Joetta Johnson, Eugene and Karen Bender, Pam Roberts and Tony Adkins have served at Sutton Lake for many years and exemplify the Sutton Lake Volunteer Program. Each received a plaque and certificate.

  • Corps of Engineers, partners lead Hurricane Evacuation Study for Maryland

    Maryland typically has to deal with the impacts of tropical storms or nor’easters rather than hurricanes. However, the state is not immune. Maryland was significantly impacted by Hurricane Isabel that made landfall in 2003. The state experienced substantial storm surge of 6 to 8 feet above normal tide levels in some areas and even breached the Army Corps’ ecosystem restoration project at Poplar Island in two spots due to elevated water levels and large waves. So, how is Maryland getting prepared for the next major storm? The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, is currently managing a Hurricane Evacuation Study for the state though the National Hurricane Program.
