    Beneath the barnacles: Archaeologists battle elements to uncover ironclad history

    SAVANNAH, Ga. — Each day as tourists saunter through the city’s famous squares, another group of visitors explores a different set of squares at the bottom of the Savannah River.

    Corps completes its Oak Ridge site preparation work

    OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (March 13, 2015) – Officials dedicated the completion of the site readiness construction project at the New Hope Center today, which is the first major milestone toward building a new Uranium Processing Facility at the U.S. Department of Energy Y-12 National Security Complex.

    For the past few months, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District lock workers on the Allegheny River have been fighting the elements to keep the locks operational as the region endured severe freezing temperatures.

  • Europe District boosts array of partners, programs

    WIESBADEN, Germany – More than ever before, the U.S. and its allies throughout Europe, Africa and Israel called upon Europe District in 2014 for architect, engineering, construction, environmental, and operations and maintenance support. USACE had record-high quality construction placement in excess of $610 million across the district in all programs ranging from Belgium to Israel, the Baltics to the Balkans, Eastern Europe to Africa, and at remote sites on both continents and Eurasia.

The river is formed about 22 miles west of Birmingham. Holt Lake, formed by the Holt Lock and Dam, Oliver Lake, formed by the Oliver Lock and Dam, and another reservoir encompass the entire course of the river for its upper 60 miles. It stretches southeast into central Tuscaloosa County and Tuscaloosa, the largest city on the river.
