    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 16, 2014) – An 1874 military map of Middle Tennessee and 1888 map of Muscle Shoals were recently restored and replicas of them are now being showcased in the Barlow Conference Room located at the headquarters of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District.

    Senior Leadership Development Fellows learn more about USACE

    Huntsville Center employees Sally Parsons, Sheron Belcher and Todd Watts selected to experience Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Senior Leadership Development Program. The four-month assignment will provide each with an opportunity to learn more about how USACE operates and how Huntsville Center fits into the big picture.
  • The Middle Breakwater is an 18,500 foot long, detached breakwater functioning as a major structure that protects the Port of Long Beach. Hurricane Marie caused eleven major damage areas (breaches or near-breaches) and 39 other areas of significant or moderate damage. In total, repairs are needed for 1,550 feet of major damage areas, 850 feet of significantly damaged areas and 1,725 feet of moderately damaged areas.

    Breakwater protects harbor from hurricane surf

    In late August, Hurricane Marie spent nearly a week churning off the coast of Mexico and Southern California. While it did not directly impact land in either country, the effects of the Category 5 hurricane were significant and costly. Los Angeles-Long Beach Harbor, located approximately 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles in San Pedro Bay, is home to two high-use ports: the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach. The ports are protected by three breakwaters: San Pedro Breakwater, Middle Breakwater, and Long Beach Breakwater.
  • SAN FRANCISCO - (Sept. 24, 2014) - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers San Francisco District Deputy Commander Maj. (P) Adam J. Czekanski received the Soldier's Medal from South Pacific Division Commander Brig. Gen. Mark Toy for his actions of valor and heroism earlier this year when he jumped onto the tracks as a commuter train was approaching to save a fellow rider who had fallen due to an apparent seizure. The Soldier's Medal is the U.S. Army's highest for valor or heroism in a non combat situation. Pictured from left are Toy, Czekanski and San Francisco District Commander Lt. Col. John C. Morrow. Czekanski, who has served three combat tours, two in Afghanistan and one in Iraq, has also received three Bronze Star medals one Purple Heart medal, credited his years of military training as he quickly assessed the situation and jumped into action to save a stranger while placing himself in imminent danger.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Soldier Receives Soldier's Medal

    Not all military awards for bravery are earned in combat. On Sept. 5, Maj. Adam J. Czekanski received the Soldier’s Medal for leaping in front of an oncoming train to rescue a man who had fallen on the tracks. The Soldier’s Medal is the highest U.S. Army award given for valor in a non-combat situation.
