    Nashville District wins USACE Innovation of the Year Award

    Engineers and geologists from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District Civil Design and Construction Branch recieved the 2013 USACE Innovation of the Year Award at the district headquarters Oct. 24, by the Lt. Col. John L. Hudson, Nashville District Commander, for their notable efforts on the Wolf Creek Information Management System.
  • The 2nd Ave bridge in Lyons, Colo., was impacted as high flows on the St. Vrain River forced the river from its channel flowing through a park and ball field, washing out parts of 2nd Avenue as well as impacting the 2nd Avenue bridge before returning to its natural channel. Regional General Permit 96-07 is being used to authorize larger flood related repair projects not covered under the Nationwide Permits. The Denver Regulatory Office developed RGP 96-07 for flood related activities in Colorado. Activities still require review from the Denver Regulatory Office.

    Colorado flooding brings flood of attention to vital regulatory permitting program

    In mid September, a wet monsoonal pattern stalled along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains bringing heavy rains to the foothills west of Boulder. The resulting flooding impacted roads, bridges and other infrastructure, with rivers carving new channels and eroding riverbanks. Major roadways in the Estes Park area sustained severe damages with limited alternatives to access these areas for repairs. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District activated its Emergency Operations Center Sept. 12, in preparation for the anticipated requests for assistance during and following the resulting flooding. Calls also began to flood the Omaha District’s Denver Regulatory office located on Chatfield Dam near Littleton, Colo.
  • Memphis District Commander COL Jeffery Anderson joined Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker and Rep. Alan Nunlee for a ribbon cutting ceremony today (Sept. 5) at the Johnson Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility in DeSoto County, Miss. The DeSoto County Regional Utility Authority was the local sponsor for this project. They had primary responsibility for all work with the Federal cost share provided in the form of reimbursements through the Memphis District. The state-of-the-art facility will give the people of this fastest growing region of Mississippi a highly efficient and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment facility that will serve the citizens of the community for decades to come.

    It’s not sexy, but it’s the greatest thing for the county,” said DeSoto County Board of Supervisors President Mark Gardner, “And it’ll open doors for DeSoto County’s future growth.”

    “Wooooh!” The blare from the mighty air horn announces “I’m the Motor Vessel George C. Grugett and I’m here to join the fleet!” A few seconds later, more horns blare in welcome response, filling the afternoon air with sounds reminiscent of early days on the Mississippi River.
