    In an effort to educate land managers and the public about two plants that are just beginning to invade the Jacksonville area, biologist Jessica Spencer gave a presentation at the 2013 Timucuan Science and History Symposium Jan. 25 in Jacksonville, Fla.

    Jacksonville District’s area of responsibility includes the Antilles and Puerto Rico, but some have only a vague idea of the location of the Antilles, its relationship with the United States, and what the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers does there.     Oklahoma Marine Enforcement Section Trooper Danny Choate and Eufaula Lake park rangers Eric Fassio and Chris Gilliland participated in the rescue and were recently recognized for their efforts with lifesaving awards presented by Tulsa District commander Col. Michael Teague.
  • Willow poles planted along the Sacramento River levee near Paintersville, Calif., Feb. 11, 2013 will provide shaded riparian habitat for threatened fish species. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District project aims to preserve riparian habitat following emergency levee erosion repairs between 2007 and 2009. The Sacramento District worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service to design the project for habitat benefit, and is the first Corps district to receive a variance under the Corps’ levee vegetation policy to plant willows near the levee after engineering analysis showed they won’t threaten the levee.

    A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District project to plant willow poles along 30,000 feet of levees in the Sacramento and San Joaquin river systems is under way, designed to preserve habitat for threatened fish.
