    State, Corps study: One in five Californians faces flood threat

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- One in five Californians lives in a flood plain and nearly everyone in California is at risk from flooding. That's the warning delivered by a new, comprehensive report on flood risk throughout the state, developed by the California Department of Water Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' South Pacific Division.
  • SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is nearing completion on new family housing units at the U.S. Army's Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah. The energy-efficient homes are expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- On military installations throughout the nation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has built hangars, fire stations, barracks and homes in a sustainable, energy-saving way, saving taxpayer dollars and working in collaboration with other federal agencies and partners.
  • The Portland District and city of Portland are partnering to restore fish passage through Crystal Springs Creek. The Corps is installing wider, natural bottom culverts, a key element of recovery of endangered juvenile salmon and trout species.

    Going Green: Restoring salmon to an urban park

    PORTLAND, Ore. -- Crystal Springs Creek is one of thousands of small streams flowing through the Pacific Northwest. Most provide ideal habitat for fish, but this creek has not supported fish passage for about 40 years. "We have accounts of salmon dating from the 50s, 60s," said Ronda Fast, Environmental Program Coordinator, Portland Bureau of Environmental Services.
  • Dave Smith, research ecologist from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Miss., surgically implants an acoustic tag into a 1-year-old steelhead trout March 25, 2013, at the Coleman National Fish Hatchery in Anderson, Calif. Smith is using the fish-tag data obtained for use in a computer model that helps evaluate habitat restoration work under the Sacramento River Bank Protection Project, a joint flood risk reduction effort between the district and the state's California Central Valley Flood Protection Board to repair river bank erosion along the Sacramento River and its tributaries.

    Fish behavior guides riverbank repairs

    Reducing flood risk in an environmentally mindful way brought ecologists to the Coleman National Fish Hatchery in Anderson, Calif., March 25-27 2013, to surgically implant electronic tracking devices into hundreds of live fish to study their behavior in the Sacramento River system.
