    Decade of work to reduce flood risk nearly complete in Napa

    More than a decade of work to reduce flood risk in Napa, Calif., is nearly complete as the Sacramento District prepares to build the project’s last phase: a bypass for the Napa River.
  • Lt. Col. John Hudson, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District commander presents Avis Kennedy, a retired Nashville District employee the Distinguished Civilian Employees award at the Estes Kefauver Federal Building on Aug. 15, 2013. The award is presented to retired employees that have been retired for two or more years with at least 20 years of service and have displayed outstanding leadership with exception and preeminence among their peers and contributed substantially to the reputation and honor of the Corps of Engineers through their service.

    Corps Distinguished Civilian Employees named at ceremony

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 15, 2013) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District celebrated 125 years of service to the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers Basins and to the nation at an open house and award ceremony that culminated with the announcement of two Distinguished Civilian Employees at the Estes Kefauver Federal Building.
  • This work is being funded through Public Law 113-2 (Sandy Bill) and is being executed via two separate contracts. Once both contracts are completed, the Corps will have restored Rockaway Beach to its originally constructed size which hasn’t been done since the 1970s.

    Army Corps begins Post-Sandy restoration work on Rockaway Beach

    On August 15, representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District and New York City announced the beginning of sand replenishment efforts at Rockaway Beach. Crews are busy placing millions of cubic yards of sand as part of the Corps efforts to repair and restore the Rockaway coastline which was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

    Corps volunteer James Browne has volunteered every summer at Bonneville for nine years, and shares a reflection on his volunteer experiences.
  • Staff Sgt. Henry Howell and Sgt. Nathaniel Boecker of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 249th Engineer Battalion, inspect generators at the Ocean Bay Public Housing complex. The 249th installed over 200 generators, providing 54 MW of emergency temporary power to critical infrastructure after Hurricane Sandy pummeled the northeastern United States in October 2012.

    Tool streamlines Corps’ power mission response during disasters

    The Emergency Power Facility Assessment Tool, or EPFAT, is designed to store important information regarding the emergency power needs of critical facilities, including hospitals and emergency response organizations. The Los Angeles District is encouraging the thousands of organizations eligible for emergency temporary power support to enroll in EPFAT, which greatly minimizes emergency response time in the event of a disaster.
