    Lead Exercise Planner Mary Lawson conducted a tabletop exercise for a worst-case scenario of a 6,500-gallon oil spill resulting from a damaged transformer at the Thurmond Power Plant. USACE personnel from all three projects and the District were in attendance. Participants also included federal, state and local response agencies, local water and energy utilities, and oil spill response contractors, for a total of 37 attendees.

    Engineers Participate in Simulated Oil Spill Exercise

    J. STROM THURMOND DAM, Ga. – Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District participated in a tabletop exercise simulating a power plant oil spill at J. Strom Thurmond Dam on Feb. 10. The exercise presented a worst-case scenario of an oil spill with the intention of helping personnel become properly prepared and know the detailed procedures needed to handle such a situation.
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District and contractors from Voith Hydro installed a 249-ton hydropower rotor on June 19, 2017, at Center Hill Dam in Lancaster, Tennessee.

  • David Rogillio, Michael Channell and Mickey Blackmon of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) review plans for containerized medical solutions, a quickly assembled, low-cost method of building airborne infectious isolation rooms using commercially available intermodal container units. In addition to the ERDC personnel, the invention team also included U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center's David Braidich of Manassas, Virginia; Brian Roden of Madison, Alabama; and Bryan Merry of Huntsville, Alabama.

    ERDC receives patent for portable medical units

    The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers met the challenge to provide additional hospital rooms for COVID-19 patients by inventing portable medical units created at the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). Relieving overcrowded hospital facilities, these prefabricated containers were modified as medical isolation rooms and received U. S. Patent 11103406, titled “Airborne infectious disease isolation units and method of making using prefabricated containers.” The patent was issued in August 2021 for the six-member invention team at ERDC’s Installation Operations Command (IOC) Installation Support Division.
