    The Portugues Dam, Puerto Rico; according to the National Hurricane Center, the island was inundated by large amounts of rainfall, anywhere from 12 to 30 inches of rain.

    Portugués Dam: Defender for a Decade

    (PONCE, Puerto Rico) Sept. 25, 2022) -- Puerto Rico's topography varies from the low plains of the southern coast to steep mountain slopes that rise up to 600 above the Portugués River. The proposed plan to build a dam was a response to the wet season and steep mountain slopes that cause runoff from heavy rain and fill the stream quickly, flooding many surrounding areas.

    USACE’s South Pacific Division Commander recently visited the Private Property Debris Removal team working in New Mexico.
  • Soldiers assigned to the 249th Engineer Battalion conduct a facility power assessment in the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority area of operations, August 25, 2022. The prime power experts split into two teams and covered nearly 22,000 square miles and assessed more than 50 facilities over five days to help identify ways to improve the power reliability and sustainability in Navajo Nation.

    Setting a drought on fire

    Picture this – it’s July and the temperatures are in the high 90s. Weeds and grasses are mature. You see smoke on a hill in the distance – smoke means fire. You worry because prairie fires can get out of hand and threaten nearby structures. Then, you learn the fire is being deliberately set by a federal agency.
  • Luhr Bros., Inc. of Columbia, Illinois, was awarded a construction contract on Sept. 9 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, to perform dike construction and maintenance along the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee. The awarded $6.8 million comes from a combination of the Disaster Relief Supplemental Act of 2022 (DRSAA) and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) funding.

    Luhr Bros., Inc. of Columbia, Illinois, was awarded a construction contract on Sept. 9 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, to perform dike construction and maintenance along the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee.
