    USACE Celebrates Ground Breaking with SFWMD to Support Everglades Restoration and Mitigate Flooding

    MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. (Dec. 12, 2022) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District joined other federal, state, and local officials along with stakeholders to break ground on the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP) New Water Seepage Barrier Wall Project, which extends the successful underground wall that was built as part of the 8.5 Square Mile Area Seepage Wall Project.
  • Dr. Emily Asenath-Smith displays an ice laminate grown on a surface using her patented invention, “Vertical draw system and method for surface adhesion of crystalline materials,” which is a foundational component of her ice adhesion research program at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Center (CRREL). Asenath-Smith is the lead investigator for CRREL’s Ice Adhesion Facility where much of her innovative research is conducted.

    Improved ice removal methods lead to patent for ERDC CRREL inventor

    With winter weather approaching in colder climates, travelers face daily frustrations of scraping away the ice clinging to steps and vehicle glass surfaces. There are also impending risks of power outages caused by ice storms. For the military, icy conditions threaten the safety and success of global operations by severing communication and utility networks, halting transportation and interfering with visibility.
  • Computer scientist Tung “Alex” Ly with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) invented the “Digital Buoy Systems and Method” in his laboratory at ERDC’s Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL), Alexandria, Virginia. He received a patent in May 2022 for his digital system which will help reduce operational costs to the U.S. Government and provide real-time, reliable and enhanced marine navigation safety for U.S. private, public and commercial industries.

    To improve marine navigation safety, enhance system efficiency and reduce buoys-tendering operational cost for the government, computer scientist Tung “Alex” Ly with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) invented the “Digital Buoy Systems and Method” at ERDC’s Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL).

  • Future USACE officers and civilians get schooled on military construction

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District, Military/IIS Project Management Branch Chief Rachael Haunz and Scott Air Force Base Area Engineer Jay Fowler provided an overview of the military construction program during a District Officer Introductory Course held at Scott AFB, Illinois, Dec. 9. Participants included mid-career officers, warrant officers and civilians across the enterprise who received their first assignment with the USACE.
