    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers uses the Hydro survey vessel "Blackwater" on the water near Fort Myers, Fla. Oct. 5, 2022 to survey vessel paths of debris and sunken ships. The vessel cleared the path for all vehicles before they could enter the Fort Myers Harbor.

    Crowdsourcing bathymetry could provide near-time picture of nation’s inland waterways

    Taking advantage of vessels already on the water, an effort in the works at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) will use those vessels’ depth finders and GPS to create a snapshot of a channel and any obstructions that may exist.
  • In a convergence of academia and real-world engineering, a group of students from the University of Pittsburgh’s Hydrologic Analysis and Design course explored the Conemaugh River Dam to expand their engineer learning beyond conventional classroom boundaries.     From Classroom to Conemaugh: Pittsburgh Students Dive into Dam Engineering

    Park Ranger April Richard's sturdy boots crunched on the gravel path as she led the tour group up a hillside to an overlook platform. Richards, the ranger at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District’s Conemaugh River Lake, welcomed a group of students and began their guided tour. She started by discussing the fundamental nature of the dam.

    LRD Commanding General visits Meldahl Locks & Dam

    Brigadier General Mark Quander, Commanding General of the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division visited the Meldahl Locks and Dam to observe the work of the Light Capacity Fleet as it conducts maintenance on the auxiliary chamber. This critical work is essential to ensuring continued flow of commerce along the Ohio River.

  • District's regulatory staff participates in Water Connectivity Workshop

    District regulatory staff recently attended a Water Connectivity Workshop in Espanola, New Mexico. The purpose of the workshop was to examine and discuss the benefits of removing low head dams and other stream channel crossings with an emphasis on improving channel connectivity and aquatic resource health.
  • The NNSA Albuquerque Complex Project received the Department of Energy’s Project Management Achievement Award for 2022 at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., April 12, 2023. Chris Velasquez, left, chief of the USACE-Albuquerque District’s Design Branch, and Kevin Vigil, Cannon Resident Engineer, USACE-Albuquerque District; hold the award at the award ceremony. Velasquez and Vigil were part of the district’s PDT for the NNSA Albuquerque Complex Project. Vigil was the project engineer and Velasquez was the tech lead.
