    The LA River and the Corps: A brief history

    The Los Angeles River is regarded as an icon of LA’s sprawling hyperurbanization. To some, it’s nothing more than a part of the landscape that splits the concrete jungle in two. To others, it’s an eyesore; a resplendent piece of nature stunted in a tomb of steel and cement. But the 51-mile-long river wasn’t always a flood control channel.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District hosted volunteer activities throughout the Savannah River Basin in honor of the 20th Annual National Public Lands Day, Sept. 28, 2013.

  • GALISTEO DAM, N.M., -- Construction on the dam's access road. Water was undercutting the culvert and threatening the road until it was corrected with help from the Bureau of Reclamation.

    Agencies Collaborate to Save Culvert, Road and Money

    The 2012 monsoonal rain season brought runoff which carred debris, choking the culvert under Galisteo Dam's access road. Safety concerns prompted the District to save the road. However the necessary fix wasn’t going to be cheap, especially in this era of budget belt-tightening.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District is working to manage the impact that a lapse in new funding appropriations will have to programs and projects we oversee. At no time will we compromise projects that have an impact to health and safety. We are managing the impacts to ongoing design and construction projects and expect the impacts to be minimal for the next few days.
