    Enge’s estate preserved this classic salt marsh wetland habitat along the Nassau River, viewed from the Nassau River Bridge, dominated by black needle rush and smooth cordgrass.

    Corps retiree inspired others, left a lasting legacy

    In September 2013, Corps retiree Noble Enge’s sisters deeded land to North Florida Land Trust in his name, to ensure its permanent protection and preservation. The Noble Enge Trust encompasses 500 acres, much of it classic salt marsh habitat near and adjacent to the Nassau River on North Main Street in Jacksonville, Fla. within the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. "When you spend your life on a river, you can't help but want to see it preserved."

  • The Los Angeles District was tasked with a seemingly impossible mission in the wake of the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces on Dec. 7, 1941: To camouflage acres upon acres of Los Angeles real estate where military aircraft were being built.     In WWII LA, no task was too tough for District

    Many people understand the engineer’s role in society. Among the definitions of engineer, the Oxford Dictionary lists one as “(verb) to skillfully or artfully arrange for an event or situation to occur.” This is certainly the definition most befitting of the myriad of challenging missions the Los Angeles District undertook in the days after Japanese forces bombed the Pearl Harbor Naval Air Base on Dec. 7, 1941.

  • IWR Climate and Global Change team lead Kathleen D. White, PhD, PE, was part of a team recognized a 2013 GreenGov Presidential Awards. The team was recognized for developing the Sea Level Rise Tool for Sandy Recovery, which is now being used in New York and New Jersey where planning and rebuilding is underway.
