    US delivers upgraded school in Kosovo

    More than 900 students and 50 faculty members in a formerly strife-torn region of Kosovo returned to a fully revamped school this fall, thanks to a collaborative humanitarian-assistance project by U.S. partner agencies. Representatives from U.S. Embassy Pristina, the Office of Defense Cooperation, U.S. European Command and Kosovo’s Ministry of Education joined city leaders Sept. 9 in Mitrovica for the reopening of Musa Hoti Primary School.

  • Using a mechanical lift, one employee transported the victim from the spillway floor to the top of the wing wall. While the victim was in transit, employees on the spillway floor made their way to the top of the wing wall to assist in transporting the victim from the lift.

    Safety drills prepare crews for “what if”

    Crews performing a repair contract at Big Bend Dam recently held an exercise to practice safely rescuing a worker who has become incapacitated in their work area. Contractor J.F. Brennan is repairing the spillway gates at Big Bend Dam near Chamberlain, S.D. During the exercise, a mannequin, playing the part of an incapacitated worker who was overcome by paint fumes, needed to be rescued from an area 25 feet above the spillway concrete and 50 feet from the nearest mechanical lift. Once the team extracted the mannequin from the work area, they faced the additional challenge of moving it out of the spillway over the 20-foot-high wing wall using the lift and providing first aid while getting medical attention in a remote location.

  • Water Festival at Summersville Lake

    Safety was the focus of the fourth annual Summersville Water Festival held on Sept. 18, 2014. The festivals are for students in Nicholas and Fayette Counties and are coordinated by the Department of Environmental Protection.
