    YMCA, Corps teaches youth Water Safety

    COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Dec 16, 2013) – A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville district park ranger at Dale Hollow Lake joined forces with the Putnam County Family YMCA today to teach second graders about water safety.

    Employees’ Excellence Recognized

    In December, several District employees received recognition for their outstanding work and performance in fiscal year 2013, including Supervisor and Employee of the Year, Ranger of the Year and others.

    During the District’s Winter Ball, Dec. 6, 2013, Frederic “Fritz” Blake was officially inducted into the District’s Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees.
  • Matos, a two-year-old Belgian Malinois that works as an explosive detection dog, picks up a scent and focuses on leading his handler, Stevie Valencia of AMK9, to a buried training target during a demonstration on the Mullet Key Formerly Used Defense Site at Fort DeSoto Park near St. Petersburg, Fla. The specialty dogs are being used as a demonstration technology, to evaluate the potential for using them on other similar sites.

    These noses know no limits

    Don is a five-year-old German Shepherd, one of several explosive detection dogs that are working alongside their handlers at the Mullet Key Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) at Fort DeSoto Park in Pinellas County near St. Petersburg, Fla.
  • Staff Sgt. James Harris, a military policeman with the California National Guard, currently serves as a security coordinator at the District's security and law enforcement office in downtown Los Angeles. Harris sustained injuries while serving as a MP platoon sergeant in Northern Afghanistan in 2012 and is participating in the Federal Internship Program, which affords him an opportunity to put his experience to work while providing him with the flexibility to complete medical treatment for his combat injuries.

    District’s Wounded Warrior program a ‘win-win’

    The Los Angeles District is supporting the U.S. Army’s Wounded Warrior Transition Program and it’s paying off in big ways—both for the District and the warriors themselves.
