    RATON, N.M., -- The hills just above Raton's Lake Maloya badly burned, and officials know rain will likely bring ash, dirt and debris right into the lake. This is a problem since the majority of the town's potable water comes from the lake.

    Post Fire, Corps Helps Town Protect Water Supply

    The people in the town of Raton, N.M., know that a wildfire’s effects don’t end when the last smoldering ember is extinguished. The “Track Fire” originated June 12 on the northern outskirts of Raton and quickly got out of control. It eventually burned almost 27,800 acres, thousands of trees and much of the ground-cover vegetation of the watershed around Lake Maloya in Sugarite Canyon, which straddles the New Mexico-Colorado border.

    Mississippi River Commission tours Kentucky Lock, Barkley hydropower plant during inspection trip

    KUTTAWA, Ky. (Aug. 11, 2011) – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District Commander, Lt. Col. James DeLapp welcomed The Mississippi River Commission and guests for a tour of the Lake Barkley Dam Power plant, and the Kentucky Lock Addition Project during a portion of their Annual Low-Water Inspection Trip Aug. 11.

  • FEMA Region IX Administrator Nancy Award accepted a Certificate of Appreciation from Col. Wehr. He presented the certificate as a token of the Corps' regard and thanks for the FEMA team's collaboration with the Corps on floodplain management, mapping, risk analysis, and hazard mitigation, especially for California's Central Valley. He said FEMA Mitigation Division Director Sally Ziolkowski (left) and Kathy Schaefer (right), Chief of the Hazard Mitigation Assistance Branch and thier teams have been key to progress.

    USACE South Pacific Division and FEMA Region IX work to reduce flood risk

    South Pacific Division Commander Colonel Mike Wehr and FEMA Region IX Administrator Nancy Ward met Monday, August 8, to discuss progress and collaboration working with the states of California and Nevada to inventory levee conditions, and modernize floodplain maps and data bases.
