    President Barack Obama appointed Maj. Gen. John W. Peabody as President of the Mississippi River Commission on August 6, 2012. MRC appointments are nominated by the President of the United States and subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

    Benefits of dam removal reach further than expected

    In an area roughly 73 to 93 miles upstream from where Embrey Dam once stood on the Rappahannock River, researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey noticed resurgence in the American eel population in their once-natural habitat, now that they are longer impeded by the 22-foot-high structure.

  • LUKE AFB, Ariz. -- This artist’s rendering show what a proposed Squadron Operations building for the incoming F-35 squadrons at Luke AFB may look like when it is complete. The Air Force officially announced the base as the site of the Air Force's F-35A Lightning II pilot training center Aug. 1. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District is scheduled to begin construction in Oct. 2012.
