  • Construction workers unload a wave attenuation device (WAD) into the water near Bayou Caddy with a barge-mounted crane. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, used the WADs as part of a living shoreline to reduce wave energy.

    Construction on Ecosystem Restoration Project nears completion

    In 2005, Hurricane Katrina swept away more than 18 acres of wetland in Bayou Caddy near Waveland, Miss. In the aftermath of the destruction, several studies concluded that the area was the most susceptible coastline in the country to be hit by another severe storm. Even without another severe storm hitting the area, the Bayou Caddy wetlands would have continued to erode due to a high wave energy concentration that is focused at that point. The erosion would have eventually led to a net loss of tidal marsh, estuarine habitat and productive fisheries. To prevent that from happening, the Federal government authorized the USACE to execute the Bayou Caddy Ecosystem Restoration Project.

  • Army Corps’ Long Beach N.Y. Coastal Restoration Project takes Shape

    Long Beach is a city in Nassau County, New York located along Long Island's South Shore. As whipping cold winds howl along its shore, Army Corps Contracting Rep. Michael Ortega and project engineer Janeen Minguillo travel in a four-wheel-drive truck and ascend over newly excavated sand making their daily rounds surveying sand levels.
  • Dr. David W. Pittman became the Director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), headquartered in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in March 2017. As Director, he manages one of the most diverse research organizations in the world – seven laboratories located in four states, with more than 2,100 employees, $1.2 billion in facilities, and a $1 billion annual program.

  • The precast, 115-tons culverts were brought in and lowered into place using a large A-frame crane. The 12-ft-high by 14-ft-wide by 34.5-ft-long precast culverts are stay-in elements within the new middle wall that will allow the future landside lock chamber to empty water from the chamber into the river.

    Massive Cross Culverts Installed at Charleroi Lock and Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District successfully installed the two massive precast concrete cross culverts in the new middle wall at Monongahela River Lock and Dam 4 at Charleroi near Pittsburgh, Pa., Jan. 31.
