LAPSE IN DoW APPROPRIATIONS - Friday, October 3, 2025

The most recent appropriations for the Department of War expired at 11:59 p.m. EST on September 30, 2025. Military personnel will continue in a normal duty status without pay until such time as a continuing resolution or appropriations are passed by Congress and signed into law. Civilian personnel not engaged in excepted activities will be placed in a non-work, non-pay status.

 

A NEW CHAPTER: - Tuesday, August 5, 2025

On August 5, 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially realigned mission oversight of USACE operations in support of U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command from the Transatlantic Division to the Southwestern Division. This transition ensures continued, focused support to U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command across the Middle East, Central and South Asia, and the Levant. Both the Middle East District and the Transatlantic Expeditionary District remain fully operational and continue delivering engineering solutions that support regional stability and operational readiness. This is a new chapter, not a new identity. The mission – and the USACE legacy – continues.

    Deployed Engineer awarded Bronze de Fleury Medal

    In an intimate ceremony on Bagram Airfield Oct. 22, 2019, Army Maj. Mark Lojewski received one of the highest awards a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) can receive – the Army Engineer Association's Bronze Order of the de Fleury Medal. The de Fleury Medal is a symbol of leadership and devotion to the engineering career field presented by the U.S. Army Engineer Association, to only a few Soldiers every year. The Bronze de Fleury Medal may be presented to an individual who has rendered significant service or support to an element of the Engineer Regiment.
  • Logistics Management Specialist Jimmy Mapp orders supplies from Logistics Analyst Liz Johnson at a warehouse on Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. Mapp has worked for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for six years and started his Afghanistan deployment as a 90-day assignment. He is now on his 10th month in country and has been promoted to a new job working in Information Technology for the Afghanistan District as a Contracting Officer Representative.

    Civilian promotions still possible while deployed with Afghanistan District

    Civilian members of the USACE team volunteer to deploy to the Afghanistan District for a variety of reasons, with experience, increased pay, and being part of something special topping the list. But many people who are on the fence about stepping up to volunteer might be interested to know the possibility of a promotion also exists when deployed with USACE.

Byrd was recently awarded the Department of the Army Civilian Service Achievement Medal both for her work supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel since arriving in Afghanistan in October 2018 and for going above and beyond the scope of her duties to establish an effective and sustainable requisitioning process for the district.

    Sleep comes easier now for deployed Afghanistan District team

    Although the noise from fighter jets and other aircraft continues throughout the night at Bagram Airfield, members of the Transatlantic Division’s Afghanistan District must still find a way to get a good night’s sleep. A restful slumber isn’t always easy to come by in a forward-deployed, austere environment, but because of the quick thinking of Logistics Specialist Tina Byrd, the Afghanistan District team now slumbers on new mattresses; more than 200 new mattresses to be exact.
